‘Thankful’ Trey Lance admits both Dak Prescott and Jimmy Garoppolo have helped him evolve as a quarterback: “I’ve heard the horror stories”
After being viewed as the longtime solution for the 49ers, Trey Lance was traded away to the Dallas Cowboys.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Trey Lance intending to be the protege of Jimmy Garoppolo. However, the North Dakota State graduate’s injury-riddled career in the Bay Area was short-lived.
In one season, the 49ers went from Garoppolo to the last pick of the 2022 draft, Brock Purdy. Lance remained on the hospital table watching Purdy stealing the glory under his nose.
It did not take long for the 49ers to realize whom they would keep between Purdy and Lance. The 24-year-old lost the battle and subsequently traded to rivals Dallas Cowboys for a late-round pick.
Truly appreciate all of the messages and prayers. Surgery was a success and I am ready to attack this rehab process. We will never understand why, but I trust that it’s all a part of His plan. I will be back better than ever. This chapter is going to make the story even greater! pic.twitter.com/l5hoBWsLDw

It was full circle for Lance. At Arlington, he sat out the 2023 season behind 3-time Pro Bowler Dak Prescott. Both situations are similar yet different, and Lance understood there was much to learn from Garoppolo and Prescott.

One reason why Mike McCarthy's return to coach the Cowboys was necessary was to continue the development of Lance in his offense ?

In a recent FaceTime with Frank Hoffman of the ‘8th Round’ Lance revealed feeling tensed about how the experienced quarterbacks would react to his inclusion to the team.
Both the teams I came into were unique situations. In that, I didn’t know how the current quarterback was going to respond to me being there. You know, with Jimmy [Garoppolo] it was the same thing [as the Dallas Cowboys]… He could’ve treated me any number of ways.Trey Lance told Hoffman

Trey Lance thanked both Garoppolo and Prescott for taking him under their wing
QB1s hate challengers for their spot. Lance had heard about the rumor and did not know how either Jimmy G or Prescott would react.
I’ve heard the horror stories of guys coming into the team, and the quarterback is not excited about them being there. Obviously, I’m really really thankful to both of them for treating me the way they did.Trey Lance said
Meanwhile, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has heaped praise on Lance for quickly catching on to the playbook.
Now starting to get the timing with the routes… He’s [Trey Lance] close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding [and] just needs as many reps as he can.Mike McCarthy said in last Thursday’s presser
Lance has also received the seal of approval from Prescott. The 30-year-old who enters the last year of his Cowboys contract claimed, Lance’s progress has helped him push his boundaries.
While the Cowboys are still in the process of figuring out a new contract for Prescott, Lance continues to develop and perhaps one day would take over from him.
