Former UFC double-champ, Olympic champion and now retired mixed martial artist Henry Cejudo is considering making his comeback possible against UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski for a title fight. This callout is rooted in Cejudo’s motive to become the first-ever UFC fighter to hold belts at 3 different weight classes. Previously in his career, Cejudo defeated Demetrious Johnson to become the UFC flyweight champion and then Marlon Moraes to become the UFC bantamweight champion.

Now, after defeating Dominick Cruz in April of 2020, Cejudo announced his retirement from the sport. After that, Cejudo focused on coaching and doing podcasts which are still doing pretty well. The names of fighters Cejudo is giving the training to are Deveison Figueiredo, Zhang Weili, and Jon Jones. It was only after Volkanovski’s second title defence that Cejudo started calling out the former for a potential superfight.

In a tweet following the latest episode of his podcast “Triple C & The Schmo” alongside sports journalist Dave Shmulenson, Cejudo said Alexander ‘The Average’ may get on my nerves, but I had to get this off my chest– In my eyes, Volkanovski-Ortega is the greatest fight in MMA history. @alexvolkanovski how about we make 2022 Fight of the Year happen #C4 [inserts 4 trophy emojis]”

The tweet is now deleted but Volkanovski was quick enough to respond to the tweet saying “You know you love me [kiss emoji]” Cejudo was so much impressed by Volkanovski’s last fight against Brian Ortega at UFC 266 that he not only chose it as his pick for 2021 Fight of the Year but also called it as the greatest fight in MMA history.

For many reasons, Volkanovski’s second title fight had everything of MMA in its best, the epitome of striking, the eliteness of grappling and the heart of both the fighters to go back and forth despite being on the edge of almost getting finished. Kudos to Volkanovski and Ortega’s cardio as well for taking the fight as entertaining as possible to the very last second of the fifth round.

Even Cejudo’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz is sure that we might see Cejudo coming out of retirement this year, but the championship fight with Volkanovski is only possible when the latter goes through and makes his third successful title defence against rival and former featherweight champion Max Holloway who he is scheduled to fight at UFC 272. Regardless, who do you think wins between Volkanovski and Cejudo?

Both the fighters are the most complete mixed-martial artists amongst the current roster of lighter weight classes of the UFC. But Cejudo is an all-time great when it comes to wrestling and we can easily trace the exponential growth of his striking capability as a fighter. Volkanovski on the other hand just keeps improving in bits and pieces and always knows how to solve the puzzle of deciphering his opponents to come out with an even better gameplan.
