“The double-champ thing, it’s the thing to do right now, but isn’t easy,” says Dana White on Israel Adesanya’s loss to Jan Blachowicz
UFC President Dana White said it like it is at the UFC 259 post-fight media scrum. There was a possible “super-fight” in the making between, Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones. After the loss against Jan Blachowicz, the hopes for that fight happening might be dim.
For the current middleweight champion, a win against the light heavyweight champion would’ve secured a place in the super-fight. UFC President spoke about Israel’s future in the post-match media at UFC 259. The bossman believes Israel should concentrate on the middleweight division.
“Jon Jones used to be at that weight class,” White told reporters. “Jon’s going to be so much bigger than Israel. I think Israel should focus on middleweight right now. Get back, keep doing what he does in the middleweight division.”
Israel Adesanya also thinks it is right that he goes back to the middleweight division for now. The fighter has promised that he will come back to the light heavyweight division when the time calls. “You’ll see me back at 205 [pounds] later in the future,” Adesanya said.
The super-fight between Israel and Jones is off
Dana White said the reason there was so much hype around UFC 259 was that the world wanted to know if Israel could beat Jan and then go on to beat Jon Jones at heavyweight. The UFC President said it isn’t an easy thing to do. “The double-champ thing, it’s the thing to do right now, but it isn’t easy to do,” White said.
“The people who have done it are absolutely, positively special.” Dana White has confirmed that Jon Jones will fight the winner of Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou at the heavyweight division.
