The gap widens at the top as Liverpool pull away from the rest of the pack as Leicester win against Tottenham
Jamie Vardy
Leicester defeated Tottenham as they take advantage of two defensive errors of Tottenham. Serge Aurier gifted a penalty with the last kick of the first half with a foul on Wesley Fofana. Despite the referee waving play on, VAR intervened and gave a penalty. Jamie Vardy scored the resulting penalty and then in the second half forced an own goal from Toby Alderweireld.
Brendan Rodgers gets his revenge over Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho derailed Liverpool’s title charge in the 2013/14 season with his Chelsea side. Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 when Brendan Rodgers was manager of the Liverpool team then. From then Liverpool went on to miss winning the title. Today he has exacted revenge on the same terms as Mourinho defeated him then- away from home, with the title on the line and the same score.
Tottenham had the added pressure of beating Leicester since Liverpool pulled ahead of the other teams with a 7-0 smashing of Crystal Palace. Everton had taken second place with a win over Arsenal and Tottenham were forced to play catch-up. However Serge Aurier imploded and smashed into Wesley Fofana in his own penalty box.
Jamie Vardy took the penalty after a VAR pitchside check and converted it to give Leicester the lead right at the end of the first half. What needs to be discussed here is the referee had waved play on when he had a view of the foul. It needs to be known if VAR is a device that the referee can use when he is in doubt or if he is in the wrong. Ultimately the referee is the one with the final call, but with VAR functioning like this, it would mean that VAR has taken over the referee’s duties.
Despite the complaints, VAR was correct in changing the referee’s original decision and was right to punish Aurier’s foul. Tottenham had its chances but Kasper Schmeichel was up to the task to deny them throughout the match. James Maddison had the ball in the net as the second half started but it was ruled out for offside by VAR.
Jamie Vardy then rose high in the 59th minute and pushed a header goalward. Toby Alderweireld tried to clear but could only put the ball into his own net. Leicester took a two goal lead in the 60th minute and comfortably saw out the match. Now they sit at 2nd place in the table, 4 points behind leaders Liverpool.
