Pat Cash, former Wimbledon Open champion stated that Rafael Nadal’s record of winning 13 French Open titles was so spectacular that it sounded ridiculous to some extend. Cash likened the Spaniard’ dominance on the red clay in Paris to a world-class football team’s domination at home or a cyclist winning Tour De France on multiple occasions.

Rafael Nadal extended his record at the French Open, by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets to claim his 13th title in Paris. Pat Cash like many other great players struggled on clay surfaces and could not progress beyond the fourth round in his five attempts at the French Open. Pat Cash spoke to Tennisnet, describing Nadal’s achievement at the French Open as nothing short of unthinkable.

“Think of any football team that is simply unbeatable in any stadium or someone who wins the Tour de France year after year. 13 times! It is actually unthinkable. If you had said that 20 years ago, you would have been locked in a madhouse,” Cash said.

Only Bjorn Borg could have come close to beating Nadal on clay courts: Cash

Beating Rafael Nadal is the toughest challenge in tennis, says Pat Cash

Pat Cash also stated that the most difficult task in the history of tennis was to defeat Rafael Nadal in Paris, and only Bjorn Borg could come close to defeating Nadal on clay courts. Bjorn Borg won the French Open six times in his career and is regarded as one of the best clay court players of all time.

“One should never say never, but one can assume that we will never see a clay court player like him again. Bjorn Borg would have come closest to that, he too was almost impossible to beat,” said Cash.

“For me, the most difficult task in the history of the sport is to win against Rafael Nadal in Paris. I can’t think of anything that could be more difficult,” Cash added.

Unimaginable that these guys won 20,20 and 17 Grand Slams: Cash on Nadal, Federer and Djokovic

Pat Cash also stated that it was unimaginable to see the Big Three of Tennis, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic win so many Grandslam titles and are still hungry for more. Pat Cash is in awe of the Big Three’s dedication to tennis and how their hunger for more titles has never faded over time. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have a record of 20 Grandslams each with Djokovic just three behind them at 17 majors.

“It is actually unimaginable that these guys won 20, 20 and 17 Grand Slams,” Cash continued. “There is something that motivates the three of them. It’s fascinating. I was happy to win a Grand Slam title, to win the Davis Cup. I was very happy with my career. And Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are not happy with 20. And two or three Davis Cups,” he added.
