Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz has made people fall in love with him very quickly, amassing fans from all around the globe. Even celebrities from other walks of life have come to admire the Spaniard, including renowned Hollywood actor Steve Carell, who is best known for his character of Michael Scott from the famous American sitcom The Office.
With Alcaraz competing at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, Carell was asked about what he liked about the 21-year-old. The 61-year-old said that he admired Alcaraz’s energy on the court.
He also said that there is a ‘childlike nature’ to Alcaraz, who seemed to enjoy the sport even when he is losing the points.
The thing I like specifically about Alcaraz is that even when he loses a great point, he seems like he enjoyed it. He seems like a kid as he plays. You can feel the childlike nature of the play with him. Some crazy rally and win or lose, he appreciates it and smiles. You can just tell that he is enjoying every moment of it. He is such a good sport I think because he can't believe some of the shots other people pull off and he appreciates them which I love about him.Steve Carell said about Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz makes a winning start to his Wimbledon title defence
While others continue to admire him for his childlike nature, Carlos Alcaraz is doing what he does best on the court — decimating his opponents. The 21-year-old has made a winning start to his Wimbledon title defence, beating Mark Lajal in the first-round on Monday (July 1).
Alcaraz showed grit to clinch the match in straight sets. It was not an easy win as he had to play a tiebreaker in the opening set. The second set was also a closely fought one before the Spaniard got his act together in the third set to register a 7-6(3), 7-5 6-2 win in two hours and 22 minutes.
The three-time Major winner later admitted that he was surprised by Lajal’s effort and performance.
Honestly, it surprised me a little bit because I haven't seen him playing or practising too much. He has the level to go up a lot. He is really young, the same age as me, and I am sure I am going to see him more often.Carlos Alcaraz said in his on-court interview
Alcaraz will face Aleksandar Vukic in the second round after the Australian overcame Sebastian Ofner in a five-set thriller in the opening round.
