WWE brought SmackDown to the state of Texas this week. No wonder why they roped in some local doyens for the show. Actor Matthew McConaughey was in attendance, and he got a good hold of the action on the blue brand. The Interstellar star caught up with fellow Texan and WWE Hall of Famer, The Undertaker.
The Deadman took to X and posted a picture of them posing for the camera backstage. McConaughey, sporting a cowboy hat, could be seen holding a Texas Longhorns custom-made WWE Championship. While Taker didn’t make it to air, his wife sure did. Michelle McCool was shown on-screen, in addition to another HOF’er, Mark Henry.
Circling back to McConaughey, he had a rollercoaster of a ride on SmackDown. Early on, the 55-year-old got a verbal whiplashing from Kevin Owens. The latter cut Joe Tessitore off on commentary, asking the former ESPN analyst why he snubbed Owens for an interview but did it for Cody Rhodes.
KO screamed that even though he hated admitting it, he felt at the moment that Michael Cole was at least an unbiased journalist, unlike Tessitore. After ranting on for a while, Kevin turned his attention to Matthew McConaughey, who was sitting front row. When the Oscar-winning actor started talking trash with The Prizefighter, Owens hit back savagely.
The Canuck vowed to beat Rhodes at the Royal Rumble just like the Ohio State Buckeyes dispatched McConaughey’s Texas Longhorns in an NCAAF semifinal clash on January 10. That jab, as acerbic as it was, received a huge reaction from a packed house at the Moody Center. Kevin has previously called Matthew out for a match, addressing the actor’s claims of being fascinated by the prospect of wrestling.
What headlined this week’s SmackDown?
Into its fourth week of being a three-hour show, SmackDown featured Kevin Owens vs. Jimmy Uso in the main event. The match was made after Big Jim attacked KO earlier on, saying that the latter talks too much.
Owens was pushed to an extent, but he eventually put Uso away. Having already beaten WWE HOF’er Rey Mysterio last Friday, Kevin is on a roll. He’ll now walk into Saturday Night’s Main Event to sign the contract for his ladder match with Cody Rhodes at the Royal Rumble.
They’ll slug it out for the Undisputed WWE title in a bout that’ll have WrestleMania implications tied to it. Kevin has held the Winged Eagle WWE title hostage since the last SNME show in December. He will lose it all if he doesn’t get the job done against Rhodes.
