Nicolas Massu, coach of Dominic Thiem has revealed the reasons behind his successful partnership with the Austrian. Massu was a Chilean professional tennis player who won the Olympic Gold Medal for his country in both singles and doubles events at Athens in 2004.

Massu and Thiem have forged a brilliant coach-player partnership together that culminated in the Austrian winning the US Open this year. The Chilean stated that he always gave Thiem an impression that he was playing with him, while he was practicing.

“I try to show Dominic all the time that I am playing the game with him. I’m not running with him but I’m playing the game with him. I’m totally focused on each point. I’m very passionate,” Massu said.

Nicolas Massu stated that he does not need to speak much while coaching Thiem as the Austrian is very motivated and takes his training sessions seriously. “When you connect with a boy like Dominic who has the same feeling and trains with great intensity…you don’t have to say anything because he is giving his best version,” he said.

Massu also added that he realizes he is coaching a world-class player and he does not need to involve himself more. He also heaped praise on Thiem claiming that not many players can train with the same intensity as his.

“There aren’t (too) many guys on the track who train with the intensity like his every day. And that’s why, in addition to his talent, in addition to his smart game, in addition to his shots and all this kind of thing, everyone knows his potential,” the Chilean said.

Under the guidance of Nicolas Massu, Dominic Thiem finished 2020 as the World number three. The Austrian finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open and the Nitto ATP Finals. His biggest achievement of the year came at the US Open, when he claimed his first ever Grandslam title, defeating Alexander Zverev in the final.
