Alize Cornet expresses her disappointment in her home crowd after a ‘heartbreaking’ third-round exit. The former world No.11 was playing some unbelievable tennis at Roland Garros 2022 until the second round where she defeated the current world No.13 Jelena Ostapenko.
But Alize Cornet had faced an injury after her match with Ostapenko. In the third round, she had the option to play or to opt out of the match. But being a fighter Cornet decided to go onto the court and see if she could perform.
However, her opponent was much Qinwen Zheng was too strong for her to compete against with an injury. She lost the first 6-0 and in the second set, she was 3-0 when she decided to forfeit the match. On her way out the homegirl was booed by the crowd.
After the match when asked about the injury Alize Cornet said, “I could not move on the court, I knew it before returning. I chose to try because it is my nature. I always try to try my luck until the end. Maybe I should not have entered the court and not taken the risk of aggravating. I still have a pretty big tear in the adductor.”
She added, “It was a risky bet, but I wanted to give it a shot. She really didn’t let me breathe either, it was also largely because of her that I lost 6-0, 3-0, and not just because of the injury. With the pain at some point, it didn’t make too much sense (to continue).”
“People have dared to boo me on the court when I give up” Alize Cornet expresses frustration with the crowd
Alize Cornet was asked about her plans on visiting the French Open next year, to which she replied by saying, “I do not know. There, hot, I don’t know. It’s sad to end like this. What makes me hallucinate more is that people have dared to boo me on the court when I give up, when we know all the same that I am quite resistant to pain and that if I give up, it is not lightheartedly. On the contrary, the French public sometimes surprises me.”
When asked about her experience with the whistles in the court Cornet said, “It almost hurt me more than the wound (she stops, tears in her eyes). After we must not generalize, it is perhaps a handful of people on the Central. But frankly, it’s abused. When you see what I have been giving on the pitch for all these years, how much it means to me.”
She added “It would have been much easier for me not to go on the court, not to make myself vulnerable with this injury. I have been true to who I am. It sucks because it’s unfair and injustice hurts. Most may understand what’s happening, but this handful of morons is heartbreaking.”
