The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal broke into the international spin with a bang against South Africa. The wrist spinners, popularly known as KulCha, sneered 32 wickets to help India thump South Africa 5-1 in their own backyard in an ODI series in 2018. A few months later they went on to scalp 17 more in five limited-overs fixtures in England. These dominant performances meant India has found a lethal duo capable of running through any opposition in the direst of conditions.

But a dip in form of Kuldeep and the revival of Ravindra Jadeja saw the partners in crime part ways. With only one place vacant in the eleven, team’s think tank backed Chahal to take on the opposition but the spin attack lost its edge over time. With the new ball bowlers failing to make quick inroads, the spinners faced the brunt of it in the middle overs. Their failure was highlighted in the recent two ODIs against Australia as they were left helpless in front of the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner, and Glenn Maxwell.

Very difficult for a fast bowler to understand the minute details

Former India spinner Maninder Singh opines that the team management should include a spin bowling coach to groom the youngsters. Maninder feels that it is almost impossible for a fast bowling coach to understand the details of spin bowling. The left-arm spinner adds that you cannot leave the youngsters on their own only because they have some experience in international cricket.

These youngsters need to be looked after and someone needs to be there who talks with them all the time. You cannot leave them thinking that just because they are playing international cricket so they would know everything,” Maninder told Hindustan Times.

Unfortunately the Indian team only has a fast bowling coach. It is very difficult for a fast bowling coach to understand the problems of a spinner. A spinner like me can understand where Kuldeep is going wrong or what areas Chahal needs to work on but a fast bowler won’t be able to identify those minute details. I think BCCI should think about having a spin-bowling coach, it’ll be a big help to the young spinners.
