Tennis players often face unnecessary backlash from fans, especially on their social media platforms. Caroline Garcia seems to be the latest in a long line of players who have had to endure unsolicited hate online.
Garcia received hateful messages following her first-round loss at the US Open. Aghast and upset at the stark remarks she received, the French tennis ace took to social media to write a heartfelt message expressing her feelings on the matter. She urged people who spread such hate on social media to reflect on their behavior and also remind themselves that the person they are attacking is also human.
This are some of the messages I received lately after loosing some matches. Just a few of them. There’s hundreds. And now, being 30 years old, although they still hurt, because at the end of the day, I’m just a normal girl working really hard and trying my best, I have tools and have done work to protect myself from this hate. But still, this is not ok.Caroline Garcia wrote on X

Garcia also advocated for regular monitoring and restriction of accounts that spread such hate online. She iterated that despite players doing their best to shield themselves from the negativity, they still get affected by it.
Other top players like American No. 2 Jessica Pegula and former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu have come out in support of Garcia. Pegula stated that it has unfortunately become the norm to have one’s family threatened should they lose a match early on in a tournament in response to Garcia’s post on X.
Yep. The constant death threats and family threats are normal now. Win or lose. https://t.co/XrlKAFpPVp

Caroline Garcia knocked out of US Open singles in the first round, will feature in doubles next
Former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia has struggled with form in recent times and has fallen to World No. 30 in rankings. To add to her struggles, she had the pressure of previous results weighing her down.
Amidst high expectations, Garcia made a first-round exit at the 2024 US Open. The 28th seed was knocked out by unseeded Mexican Renata Zarazua following a 6-1, 6-4 defeat.
However, the 2022 US Open semifinalist and WTA Tour Finals winner still has a chance at redemption in New York as she is partnering with one of America’s best, Danielle Collins, in the women’s doubles category. Collins, who had an unbelievable season early on with 15 straight wins, also exited the singles after losing to compatriot Caroline Dolehide in the first round.
The pair of Garcia-Collins will take on the all-American team of Alana Smith and Anna Sinclair Rogers in the evening session on August 28.
