This day in 2007: India’s remarkable semi-final win over Australia in T20 World Cup
On this day in 2007, MS Dhoni-led India enlisted a remarkable 15-run win over Australia in the 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final to set a final clash against the arch-rivals, Pakistan.
In the semis, former all-rounder, Singh, didn’t show mercy and went all guns blazing against the Australian bowlers, hitting 70 off just 30 balls laced with five fours and equal number of sixes in Durban.
India defeated the Adam Gilchrist-led side by 15 runs after setting a target of 188/5 in 20 overs in the first innings.
India became the first team to lift ICC T20 trophy
At one point, Mathew Hayden along with Andrew Symonds were crusing towards the target but Indian bowlers kept taking wickets at crucial moments. The tournament ended with Sreesanth’s famous catch off Misbhah-ul-Haq and India lifting the cup.
The win came in the backdrop of India’s loss in 50-over format following which senior players decided to pull out of T20 World Cup. India were not favourites at the onset, but Dhoni’s troops proved everyone wrong and lifted ICC’s first T20 trophy.
