World No.3, Dominic Thiem lost in an epic three-set battle against World No.4, Daniil Medvedev in the title clash of the Nitto ATP Finals 2020 on Sunday at the O2 Arena in London.
Despite bagging the opening set, Thiem fell short in what was his second consecutive loss in the finals of the year-end tournament, having lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2019 edition.
After a dejecting loss on Sunday in his second Masters’ finals, Thiem took to his website to write an open letter revealing his thoughts about the defeat as well as congratulating the winner, Daniil Medvedev on ending the year on a high and expressing his gratitude towards his ‘mini-team’ in London.
‘Daniil deserves this title!’: Dominic Thiem

The Austrian wrote, “6:4, 6:7, 4:6 against Daniil Medvedev in London. Certainly this loss hurts. After 2019 I also lost my second Masters final, I hope I will succeed next time. Daniil won the trophy without losing a match, he really deserves this title.”
Apart from the negative result in the finals, Thiem had quite the positives to take back with him and reflect upon.
“I can still be proud of a sensational final of the ATP-season: in the group matches I defeated Rafael Nadal, I beat Novak Djokovic, the current number one, in the semifinal. Since January 2019 my head-to-heads have been positive against the leaders of the game – this encourages me for 2021,” Thiem added.
The US Open Champion is eyeing to get himself on top of the rankings as his goal for the upcoming season where the Austrian hopes to play in front of sold out stadiums.
“The goals are clear: I want to win my next Grand Slam and I want to play a part in the race for the number one position,” Thiem said.
“I hope the entire Corona-situation will be over soon, I can’t wait to play in front of sold out stadiums and indoor venues. All the players have missed the fans most for the last months. Though I think we will still need a little patience.”
As of now, the World No.3 is looking forward to relax in Austria for a few weeks before starting to prepare for the next season for which he is in a good state already.
