Daniil Medvedev ousted Rafael Nadal 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 to secure a spot in the last round of the Nitto ATP Finals. The World No.4 gave Rafa a taste of his own medicine as he went on to win the match after being a set and a break down. 

At this event in 2019, Nadal was the one who saved a match point and came back to win the match after a 5-1 deficit in the third set. With his victory over the World No.2, Medvedev is the only player to remain undefeated at this championship this year.

Medvedev reflects on his maiden victory over Rafa

In his post-match press conference, Medvedev applauded Rafa for the warrior that he is.

“To beat Rafa, you need everything. A good backhand, good forehand working (that) day. Mentally you need to be super strong, because he’s there (for) all the points,” he stated.

The Russian is slated to play against Dominic Thiem in the final later today. The duo vanquished Novak Djokovic and Nadal in the semi-finals to set up this bout.

Citing the attention these matches got online, Daniil added, “The comment (that) got the most likes was, ‘My mind is saying Dominic and Daniil will be in the final. And my heart goes for Rafa and Novak.” 

To reflect on the results of the day, Medvedev stated, “This time, the mind won. It’s great that we managed to beat two (of the) biggest players in the history of sport.”

Medvedev and Thiem are gearing up for the final showdown which will take place later today. The former has claimed that he “for sure can cause some troubles,” for the Austrian.
