Thisara Perera announces retirement from International Cricket
Sri-Lankan All rounder, Thisara Perera has announced his retirement from international cricket. The news of Perera’s retirement from international cricket is circulating in the Sri Lankan cricket circles including social media.
Perera told the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) administration of his decision to retire from international cricket. His decision comes after rumours that SLC selectors are considering removing some senior cricketers, including Perera, from the limited-overs squad of the Sri Lanka national team.
Sri Lanka will play an ODI series in Bangladesh and an ODI and T20I series in England in the near future. Sri Lankan Cricket selectors have subsequently stated that some senior cricketers could be dropped from the Sri Lanka ODI squad for the upcoming Bangladesh and England ODI tours. Senior players Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal, and Thisara Perera are doubtful to be considered for the upcoming limited-overs tours, according to a senior SLC official.
Thisara Perera has several records to his name
On December 24, 2009, against India, Perera made his international debut. He has since played over 250 matches for Sri Lanka and was a member of the 2014 ICC World Cup T20 winning team. Perera was also the first Sri Lankan cricketer to take a hat-trick in a T20I match, and he holds the record for most matches played and runs scored in a T20I match for Sri Lanka without scoring a half-century.
He is just the second bowler, after Brett Lee, to take a hat-trick in both T20Is and ODIs. Thisara Perera made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan cricketer to score six sixes in a single over. He did so while competing in the Major Clubs competition for Army Sports Cricket Club.
Perera has played in 166 One-Day Internationals, 84 Twenty-20 Internationals, and six Tests for Sri Lanka. In his international career, Perera has amassed a total of 14 half-centuries and one century. Perera has scored 2338 runs and taken 175 wickets in 166 ODI matches, while he has played 84 T20I games and scored 1204 runs and taken 51 wickets. He’s also appeared in six Tests and taken 11 wickets.
Thisara Perera will continue to play domestic cricket and is expected to feature in the major Global T20 tournaments.
