Former Swedish player Thomas Enqvist kicked off his partnership with Matteo Berrettini ahead of the Indian Wells Open last month. After one month of working together, Berrettini has shown some impressive improvements on the court. Enqvist has now revealed that he will continue to coach the Italian star.
Berrettini dropped to World No. 90 before the Monte Carlo Masters as he continues to struggle with numerous injuries that have caused setbacks in his career. The former World No.6 and Wimbledon finalist struggled to be at his best at the Argentina Open and the Chilean Open. He reached the quarter-finals of the Rio Open in Brazil, the only tournament in which he has gone past the round of 16.
However, after winning just one match at the Indian Wells Masters, the 29-year-old claimed two wins in Miami. He stunned tenth seed Alexander Bublik in the second round, having crushed Alexandre Müller in straight sets. He fell to Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot in the round of 32.
It was at the Monte Carlo Masters that Berrettini gave a high-level performance in the Country Club court. He defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in less than fifty minutes. Medvedev angrily crushed his racket after the first set, he smashed his racket six times on red dirt before ultimately snapping it in half.
Berrettini’s run at the Monte Carlo came to an end in the round of 16 when he lost to Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca 3-6, 2-6. He famously defeated Alexander Zverev at the tournament last year. In an interview with BolaVip, Enqvist, who has worked with Stefanos Tsitsipas previously, admits that he plans to continue working with Berrettini, while also sharing his first takeaway from their partnership:
Yes, it is the plan to continue working with Matteo. I have been in Monte Carlo with him as well. He is a super nice guy. He has also had a lot of injuries in the past, just like myself, but he is healthy now, which is amazing. He is working super hard, and I think he is improving all the time. He has had some good wins already, beating Bublik this season and also Medvedev this week.
Berrettini’s focus will be on getting to his best level before the French Open. The Italian star participated in the Hassan Grand Prix in Marrakesh but didn’t win a single match. He was one of the favorites to win the tournament, even though he was unseeded, as many expected him to use his experience to take the ATP 250 title.
Matteo Berrettini’s coach believes the Italian is getting back to his physical best after injuries
Matteo Berrettini has reached the quarter-finals of every Grand Slam on tour. He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the US Open before getting to the final of the Wimbledon Championship back in 2021. He often gives his best in big tournaments and at the Davis Cup Finals.

Following the Monte Carlo Masters, he’s set to take a one-week rest and practice before taking to the court for the Madrid Open. After Madrid, he plays in Rome before heading to the French Open. During the aforementioned interview, coach Thomas Enqvist revealed that Berrettini is finally getting back to his best on the court:
He is finally getting back to where he wants to be. He is obviously a very, very good player. He just has to make sure he stays healthy and is enjoying playing tennis again. He is a super hard worker and he is a very nice guy to work with. Everything has been great.
Last year, Berrettini did not participate in the French Open due to an injury he suffered at the Italian Open while taking on Casper Ruud in the round of 32. He returned to the court at the Wimbledon Championship, but crashed out in the first round. He misses the US Open, returning to tour in September.
