Throwback: Virat Kohli’s finger flick controversy in Sydney Test 2012

Virat Kohli once used to make the headlines frequently as he does now but the difference was the present Indian skipper was always involved in some controversy making a negative headlines during his early days of cricket. The Cricket superstar is known for his showcase of aggressive mannerisms on the field and the middle finger flick controversy is a testament to it. He also admitted that he may have “got away” with what he did during the 2012 Sydney Test between India and Australia
Virat Kohli was a part of the Indian contingent competing against Australia in the Sydney test 2012. Kohli lost his cool and went on to show his middle finger to the Australian crowd who were taunting and kept on going after the young Kohli. This image of Kohli flicking his middle finger spread like a forest fire across the internet and Australian media and went on to make controversial negative shaded headlines on Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli’s take on the incident
Kohli recently spoke about the incident. “The one thing I remember most is when I’d had enough of the Australian crowd at Sydney [in 2012] and I just decided to flick a [middle] finger at them,” he recalled in an interview with Wisden Cricket Monthly. “I really laugh at a lot of the things I did when I was younger but I’m proud that I did not change my ways because I was always going to be who I am and not change for the world or for anyone else. I was pretty happy with who I was.”
With regard to action on the cricketing field, the Indians had a horror test. Batting first, they scored just 191 runs before the Aussies declared on 659/4 with Michael Clarke scoring an iconic triple century. India then put up a fight in the second innings to get 400 before succumbing. Kohli did not have a very good test as he scored just 31 runs across both innings.
The Indian captain is currently processing the youngsters to play in the big stage both in IPL and international cricket. Virat Kohli has been constantly supporting his team mates and especially the youngsters are tutored by him to avoid the early days mistakes which he committed in the beginning of the career. Virat Kohli is currently aiming for the maiden ICC inaugural World Test Championship Trophy by competing against New Zealand on June 18, 2021.
