Things are heating up in the National Football League. As Mariah Carey begins to warm up and hit the boards, it’s officially playoffs race season in NFL and the race is very close this year. In five of the eight divisions across the two conferences, there’s less than a game difference between the top two teams.
Meanwhile, the wildcard race has gotten very much alive in the last week. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers took down the Detroit Lions last week on Thanksgiving. And needless to say, the stakes have become higher when the Cowboys and Lions battle it out this week.
The Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) are looking to return to the playoffs after missing them last year. The Detroit Lions (7-5) are chasing their first title after a heartbreaking exit in the divisional playoffs last year despite being the top seed. When they meet on Thursday, the Cowboys are also looking to avenge their blowout humiliation at home in 2024. The two teams last met on October 13, 2024, when the Lions buffaloed the Cowboys 47-9, with Jared Goff throwing 315 yards and three touchdowns and David Montgomery rushing to the endzone twice, while the Cowboys’ quarterbacks combined for three interceptions.

Why can the Dallas Cowboys win?
The Dallas Cowboys are in blazing form, and they have the momentum. The Cowboys are on a roll, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Kansas City Chiefs. They have been unstoppable.

George Pickens has emerged as a prime receiver in the Cowboys’ unit. He has the seventh-most receptions in the league (73), second-most yards (1,142 behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba), and tied for third-most touchdowns (8). He, along with Dak Prescott, can get the passing game blazing, which makes the pairing so dangerous. On that note, Prescott has received serious MVP consideration at a few different points of the season.
He’s ranked second in passing yards and tied for second-most touchdowns. Overall, the Dallas offense has 393.1 yards per game, more than any team. They also lead the league in most passing yards per game.
The Dallas side has also reaped benefits from the additions on their defensive end. They added Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets, and the defense has gotten much more solid in the past few weeks.
Why can the Detroit Lions win?
Despite the controversial loss to the Packers last week, Jared Goff had a consistent performance. He completed 76.9% of his passes and threw 256 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried once for a long 24 yards. In overall metrics, Jared Goff has thrown for 3052 yards and 25 touchdowns, sixth and second in the season rankings for those metrics. He also has one of the highest passer ratings in the league.
The Detroit offense is not bad either. They have the third-best average per game yardage, behind the Lions and the Bills. The Detroit rushing offense is one of the elite in the league with the Sonic duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. While neither team is in the top 10 in defense, the Lions are ranked much better than the Cowboys despite their recent upgrades.
