During a windy day on Friday at the Augusta National, Tiger Woods scripted more golf history. His cut at the event saw him become the first player to make 24 consecutive cuts at The Masters tournament. After the round, the 15-time major champion expressed confidence on his chances of winning here again.
Prior to the start of the tournament, there had been lot of questions raised on whether Woods can compete at the highest level again. Not only has he gone and done just that, he has finished higher than some of the big names who have been playing more regularly than him.
Due to the weather delay on Thursday, Woods was only able to play 13 holes. This meant he needed to play a total of 23 holes on Friday.
The 48-year-old golfer concluded the first round by firing a score of 1-over 73 before shooting a level par score of 72 in the second round to make the cut. This saw him overtake golf legends Gary Player and Fred Couples for the most consecutive cuts made at The Masters at 24. Woods later claimed he is “still in the ball game” and has a “great chance” going into the final two rounds.
It's been a long day. It was a good fight. We did really well out there and I'm still right there in the ball game with a great chance going into the weekend.Tiger Woods told ESPN’s Michael Eaves.
Tiger Woods admits he has done good as a professional at Augusta during The Masters
Playing in The Masters tournament at the Augusta National is the dream of many golfers. While many are just happy to get a chance to play at this iconic course, some have made a huge name for themselves on this field with Tiger Woods being one of them. The golfer has now admitted that he has done good as a professional at this golf course.
In his first ever start as a professional at the Augusta, Woods ran away with the green jacket as he won his first major, finishing 18-under 270, 12 shots ahead of the runners-ups. Since then he has won the event on four more separate occasions and has nine top 10 finishes.
When asked about what he felt about hearing the numbers, Woods went on to praise the “aura” present at the Augusta after joking about missing the cut as an amateur.
I've been lucky enough to play this event all these years... As a pro I've done well... I did miss a cut when I was an amateur... but as a pro I have done well. And it's just an amazing aura that Augusta National has and I've been lucky enough to have been coming here since I was 19 years old.Tiger Woods said.
Woods will now enter the weekend at T22 while being eight shots behind co-leaders Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler who are all 6-under for the tournament after two rounds. He will tee off with LIV golfer Tyrrell Hatton in the afternoon while trying to mount a huge comeback on the moving day on Saturday.
