Tiger Woods reached out to Rory McIlroy following his heartbreaking loss at the US Open. Woods said that he texted McIlroy around a week after the tournament. He wanted to give McIlroy some space before reaching out, knowing that the “raw emotion” of losing would still be present.

During the interview at the Open Championship, Tiger Woods was asked about Rory McIlroy’s condition after the US Open 2024. He empathized with McIlroy, pointing out that all champions had suffered defeats.

I had to send him a nice text that was it. I waited a week before he came down. I know this is a difficult moment. We’ve all been there as champions. We all lose. Unfortunately, it just happened, and the raw emotion of it, it’s still there, and it’s going to be there for, I’m sure, some time. The faster he’s able to get back on the horse and get back in contention, like he did last week, the better it is for him.

Woods spoke about the significance of swiftly bouncing back, citing McIlroy’s great performance the following week at the Scottish Open.

Unfortunately, McIlroy did not receive the text right away, as he had changed his phone number shortly after the U.S. Open. When Woods brought up the message, McIlroy realized he had accidentally “blanked” his buddy and hero.

McIlroy made sure to thank Woods for his support when he got to know. He emphasized the extraordinary bond he has had with Woods over the years. He mentioned competing with Tiger Woods was his childhood dream.

Tiger Woods has struggling this year

Tiger Woods has been suffering from injuries in recent years. He dropped out of the Genesis Invitational in February. Afterwards, Woods finished in 60th place in the Masters Tournament and didn’t make the cut at either the PGA Championship or the US Open.

Despite his terrible record, Woods remains confident about participating at the 2024 Open championship. He feels he has the strength to win, claiming it’s “just a matter of executing.” However, injuries have prohibited him from competing in the U.S. Open since 2020.

Woods recently responded to Colin Montgomerie‘s suggestion that he retire. He clearly wasn’t happy with it and clapped back, stating,

Well, as a past champion, I'm exempt until I'm 60. Colin's not. He's not a past champion, so he's not exempt.

Woods last won the Open Championship in 2005, where he finished 11 shots ahead of Montgomerie.
