Tiger Woods blasted Colin Montgomerie’s proposal that he “retire” from golf. Woods reminded that as a previous winner, he is exempt from competing in The Open Championship until he is 60 years old. Montgomerie, who has never won a major, does not receive the same exemption, according to Woods.

Woods’ statement was simple and forthright, asserting his power to determine when he will retire from the sport. He made it clear that, unlike Montgomerie, he has the freedom to keep playing as long as he feels he can compete and win.

As a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion. So he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.
