As Tiger Woods continues to recover from a back surgery, questions regarding the Ryder Cup have once again come up. As per reports from AP, he has reportedly been given a “deadline” to make a decision regarding the captaincy role for the 2027 edition.

Woods, the 15-time major champion, has been out of playing action since appearing at the 2024 Open Championship in July. A ruptured Achilles tendon in March last year, followed by a back surgery in October, saw him miss the entirety of the 2025 season.

While Woods has been absent from the greens, he has been present behind the scenes. The golfer has continued to work as one of the player-directors and has also served as the chairman of the new PGA Tour Future Competition Committee.

In the midst of this, speculations regarding his future as a potential U.S. Ryder Cup captain have risen again. As per AP reports, the 50-year-old has been given a “soft deadline” until the Masters Tournament to decide whether he wants to take this role or not. According to the report, he is also the only candidate at the moment.

Woods has led this country before. In 2019, he would serve as the playing captain of Team USA during the Presidents Cup. Under his captaincy in Australia, USA won the event 16-14.

After the U.S. lost the 2023 Ryder Cup against Team Europe in Rome, Italy, the name of the former World No.1 came up as the potential captain for the 2025 edition. Eventually, Keegan Bradley was named as the captain and succeeded Zach Johnson.

Bradley, who decided not to take the playing captain role, saw his team get crushed once again. Despite a late fightback on Sunday, where they won a record-breaking 8.5 points, they lost the event as Europe ran out as 15-13 winners.

Tiger Woods previously claimed he had not made any decision regarding Ryder Cup

Last week, Tiger Woods took part in the pre-tournament press conference of The Genesis Invitational. As he got ready to serve as the host, he would inform the reporters that he had not made any decision regarding the Ryder Cup.

While speaking with the media last week, the golf Hall of Famer claimed he was trying to figure out if he could do any justice to the team with his time.

They have asked me for my input on it, and I haven’t made my decision yettrying to figure out if I can actually do our team, Team USA and our players and everyone that’s going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time.

Tiger Woods told the reporters

In his career, Woods has represented his country in the Ryder Cup 8 times. Despite his individual brilliance, Woods has a pretty staggering record in this event.

The golf great has won this event just once in his career, in 1999. In 37 matches, he has a 13-21-3 record while going 0-4-0 and recording 0 points in his last appearance in 2018.

Speaking of the Ryder Cup, the next edition of this event will be played at Adare Manor in Ireland. With two back-to-back wins, Europe will be aiming for a three-peat. Whoever takes the role of the U.S. captain in 2027, their task will be to stop this from happening and get the trophy back to America.

Tiger Woods claims there is possibility of him playing at 2026 Masters Tournament

At the Genesis Invitational press conference, Tiger Woods sent the golf world into a frenzy by dropping a one-word reaction to his possible return to the 2026 Masters Tournament. A few days later, he would once again make a comment regarding this and expressed that there is a possibility of him playing at the Augusta National in April.

Woods would join the broadcasting booth of the Genesis Invitational during the third round. While speaking and having some jokes with Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman, the latter would ask if there was any possibility of him being out there on the course.

Woods would simply say “there is” and add that he did not know whether he would play in any other event before that.

Woods, the 5-time Masters Tournament winner, has a lifetime exemption in this event due to his status as past champion. In his last appearance in 2024, he broke another record as he made the cut.

He would make his 24th consecutive cut in this event. This saw him overtake Gary Player and Fred Couples‘ record of 23. He, however, went on to finish in the last place with a score of 16-over par.
