On Monday night, golf great Tiger Woods was back in action. The 15-time major champion made his second appearance at the TGL as his team Jupiter Links Golf Club took on Rory McIlroy‘s Boston Common Club.

In the first match of the season, the Woods-led side suffered a heavy 12-1 defeat against the Los Angeles Golf Club. This added more pressure on them in the second game as the Boston-based outfit went toe-to-toe with them.

The two co-founders of the TGL went up against each other. At the par-5 10th hole, the two golfers hit a great shot setting up an eagle-putt. Both however, missed that.

After McIlroy made the birdie putt, it was Woods’ turn to get his team level again. He eventually ran out of time to hit his putter.

As per the rules of the TGL, the players have to hit their shot within 40 seconds. If the timer runs out, a loud buzzer sounds off giving the player a penalty stroke.

Woods would take a little bit of time and fail to hit his putt within the time limit. This resulted in him becoming the first player in the league’s history to have a shot clock violation. As he could no longer match Rory McIlroy‘s birdie putt, the American international lost the hole.

Before this, Tiger Woods even had a hilarious exchange with his mother who was in attendance for this game. The 49-year-old would wave her a hand and claimed, “Not gonna suck tonight”.

Tiger Woods reflects on creating unwanted history at TGL

In his career, Tiger Woods has created several records and historic moments. On Monday though, he had a moment to forget as he became the league’s first player to be penalized after for the shot clock violation. After the round, he reflected back on this moment.

The golfer claimed that usually whenever he attempts a put, he tries to control his heart beat. On this occasion, it took a bit longer for him.

Well, normally I slow my heart rate down before I pull the trigger, so dropping my heart rate down sometimes takes a little bit longer than others. As I told these guys, it’s on me. I should have called time out as I built in my stance because of the time. But I was dropping my heart rate down like I normally would. It just took too long.

In the end, Woods and his team did get the job done. An inspired performance from Tom Kim, who was playing in place of Max Homa, saw them win the match in overtime. Kim and Kevin Kisner would win the closest-to-the-pin challenge to help them over the line.
