Last week, the world of golf was left mourning as one of its finest players lost his mother. Kultida Woods, the mother of Tiger Woods, passed away at the age of 80. As a result of this, he has withdrawn from the Genesis Invitational at the Torrey Pines course.
The 15-time major champion was looking to make his first full start since the Open Championship last year. After getting injured at the Masters Tournament in 2023, Woods would undergo another knee surgery which kept him out for a while. It was at the Genesis Invitational where he made his official return last year.
While he was forced to withdraw from this event last year, he did make starts in all four major championships. After missing the cut at the Open Championship, Woods would undergo a back surgery and did not tee off at the Hero World Challenge in Bahamas as he did in 2023.
He was thus aiming to make his first start of the 2025 season as the Genesis Invitational. However, he has now taken back his name and claimed that he was “not ready” to be on the course following his mother’s death.
I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.

Woods, who is the tournament’s host, will be at the course later this week. For now, he has been replaced by Jake Knapp in the playing field.
As for Kultida Woods, details regarding her death have not been revealed yet. She is survived by her son Tiger and his two children Sam and Charlie Woods.
Tiger Woods recently played golf with US President Donald Trump
While Tiger Woods may not be playing in the Genesis Invitational this week, he did play a round of golf recently. Ahead of Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, the former World No.1 played a round of golf with US President Donald Trump.

Woods along with his son Charlie was seen on the range with Trump. This incident came as a shock to many as it happened just a few days after Kultida Woods had passed away.
Speaking to the media later on, Trump noted that Woods is a “great guy” and admitted that he was “sad” with her demise.
He was great. He’s a great guy. He’s very sad over his Mother’s passing. He’s a great guy.
Donald Trump told the reporters on Sunday

This meeting of Trump and Woods also takes place after he (Woods) along with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and player-director Adam Scott met Trump at the White House recently. They would talk about the ongoing merger deal between the Tour and the PIF and thank Trump for his intervention.
It now remains to be seen how much will Trump’s intervention have an effect on the merger deal. The 47th U.S. President had previously claimed that he could get a deal done between the two parties in 15 minutes.
