Detroit Tigers ended their decade-long postseason drought with a 4-1 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. The team successfully secured an American League Wild Card berth, clinching a spot in the playoffs.
With years of getting postseason breaks, the players and fans did not expect to participate in October games and made their breakaway plans with family, friends, and loved ones. However, they were more than happy to cancel everything and shower in beer and music to celebrate their special night.
It’ll be their first playoff berth since 2014 making it a dream come true for the organization. Reliever Bean Brieske said he had plans to attend a friend’s wedding but had to call and cancel it. Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy planned a trip with his girlfriend to the Dominican Republic but apparently gave her a heads-up early about a possible playoff chance.
Kerry Carpenter who is expecting their first child had doctor appointments and family preparations plans ready, and although some will be fulfilled others will unfortunately have to get canceled.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene had an early prediction as he said, “What if we win out” and that’s what’s the team celebrating now. Brieske expressed he never thought they would be in a postseason game this 2024, while Greene said, “Believe is a big thing…we never stopped believing.”
Coach A.J. Hinch said, “It’s kind of picture perfect on how to punch our ticket to October, with an imperfect play.” On the other hand, their Friday opponent, the Chicago White Sox set an unwanted modern-day baseball record with their 121st loss.
Social media celebrates Detroit Tigers winning a playoff spot
Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris called the team “pretty dangerous” as they grind through the tough times to “make some noise in October.” First baseman Spencer Torkelson said, “It’s been a dream come true.”
Fans are ecstatic on social media as they celebrate the team’s win in a decade. One fan noted on X, “What a ride it’s been”, while another quoted, “Gritty Tigs”. Check out more fan reactions below:
The Detroit Tigers have clinched a playoff spot. One of the most improbable runs of the century. They traded the best player to move at the deadline. They were 55-63 on Aug. 10. Since then, they’ve been the best team in all of baseball, and they’ll be a tough out in October.

What a ride it’s been. I am in tears, 10 long years, from being down almost 10 games just over a month ago to making the playoffs is historic. What a run for this team!!

The Detroit Tigers have secured the 2nd AL wild-card spot while their divisional rivals Kansas City have also got their own chance to play in the postseason. Harris noted, “With every player I hugged, I had a flashback to some moment of adversity they faced,” and how they emerged as victors in the end.
