Former British tennis player Tim Henman urged World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz to take care of his body, claiming incessant participation in tournaments may result in more injuries. Alcaraz came to Paris after recovering from an arm injury and even his rival Jannik Sinner survived a hip injury.
Henman said playing in big tournaments affects the players mentally and physically, and so they need to control the schedule, probably suggesting that they need to skip some tournaments to recharge their batteries so that the grueling schedule doesn’t affect them. The 49-year-old also advised the players to focus on their bodies during training sessions as well to avoid injuries.
Then, in their training in the off-season, it is important to make sure they aren't going to get those injuries because they can hold you back and mean you're not going to be able to do yourself justice.Tim Henman told Eurosport
Alcaraz and Sinner have shown signs of physical difficulties during their matches in the current tournament. The Spaniard’s victory in the second round came in four sets and some pundits believe it’s due to the injury. Sinner’s wins in the three matches he played came in straight sets.
Mats Wilander expresses his concerns over the growing trend of injuries among young players
Mats Wilander is worried that young players are forced to play a lot of tournaments and are falling victim to injuries. The former French Open champion believes that apart from the schedule and tennis ball inconsistency, players’ style also contributes to injuries.
It definitely is because they're trying to play so big. They try to go pretty much full out all the time, so that's changed. That's why the game is faster.Mats Wilander told Eurosport
Wilander believes tennis has become faster and more explosive and at the same time, he had to blame the weather in Paris. He said as the weather gets colder due to rain, tennis balls get heavier.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner is aiming for his second Grand Slam title of the season and career, while Carlos Alcaraz, who won the 2022 US Open and 2023 Wimbledon Championships, wants to include the Roland Garros title in his trophy cabinet for the first time.
The Spaniard will next face Sebastian Korda, while Sinner will next take on the winner of the third-round match between home favorite Corentin Moutet or Sebastian Ofner. Sinner also has the chance to become the new World No.1 if Novak Djokovic fails to advance to the championship match.
