Former British No. 1 Tim Henman expressed his support for compatriot Emma Raducanu by calling out fans who have criticized her recent absence from tournaments. She has just played one tournament in Washington, where she made the quarterfinals, since her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon.
Raducanu has missed recent WTA 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati as well as the Paris Olympics. She has been receiving slack from fans for her decision to withdraw from the big events, especially with the US Open just around the corner.
Henman thinks the 21-year-old is being scrutinized by an obsessive group of haters, and other former British pros like Laura Robson seem to agree with that assessment.
There is almost a borderline obsession about different elements of her game and where she is going wrong. She hasn’t played in Canada and Cincinnati over the last few weeks, big deal! It’s two tournaments out of 52 weeks, she has played plenty of tournaments this year and she is top 50 in the WTA Race for this year. She is continuing to build and get fitter, stronger and faster. Her game is fantastic. She will be top 20 or top 30 before long, so we need to stop this level of scrutiny.Tim Henman told Tennis365
Raducanu is set to return to Flushing Meadows, the site of her greatest triumph – winning the 2021 US Open as a qualifier without dropping a set.
Emma Raducanu enjoys vacation in the UK ahead of the US Open
While several pros are grinding to be in their best shape for the last Slam of the year, Emma Raducanu seems to be taking the opposite approach as she shared pictures of her vacation in Britain.
The former US Open champion hinted that her time away from the courts was likely a way to regroup and be prepared for the season’s final Grand Slam. With no concerns of wrist injury following a hectic couple of weeks last month, Raducanu is confirmed to play in the US Open for the first time in two years.
Raducanu sat out for several months due to a series of injuries that followed her incredible 2021 season. However, she seems to have returned to the top of her game again and has climbed up the WTA rankings this year, currently occupying the 71st spot.
