- Timothée Chalamet publicly suggested LeBron James should join the New York Knicks for his potential farewell season.
- Criticism of LeBron's impact on the Lakers has increased, with some analysts claiming the team performs better without him.
- Analysts propose LeBron could remain with the Lakers if he accepts a role player position, similar to Chris Bosh or Kevin Love.
With just 18 games left in the 2025-26 season, doubts are growing about whether this could be the last time LeBron James plays in a purple and gold jersey.
The superstar’s family has built its base in Los Angeles, and older son Bronny James is juggling between the senior team and its G-League outfit.
On top of that, the ‘King’ has many of his businesses based in the city, which means it would take a lot for him to move away from family and friends, just to continue playing his already legendary career.
However, Lakers’ governor Jeanie Buss‘ dissatisfaction with the 41-year-old’s mannerisms, along with recent criticism that the team is better off without him in the starting lineup, have fueled speculation of a move back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
I don’t want to interfere with any tampering rules or anything. I know there is a prized free agent next summer, possibly sitting on my right. Might not be your last year. But if it is a farewell tour in a New York Knicks uniform, oh my God, that would be unbelievable… C’mon, let’s get LeBron to New York, start the petition.
Timothee Chalamet said
After the Dune actor finished his open recruitment, Mind the Game co-host Steve Nash asked LeBron James if he had an answer for this proposal. To this, the league’s all-time leading scorer just laughed and suggested they have this conversation backstage.

While many would have scoffed at the idea of the superstar leaving the Lakers for the Knicks, the current turn in criticism could spring ideas that might surprise a few.
Criticism of LeBron James’ impact on current Lakers is growing
Back in 2020, Los Angeles Lakers fans were willing to do anything to ensure LeBron James felt he was one of them. There were even conversations if he would be considered one of the franchise’s all-time greats.

Now that narrative has flipped. Not only are former players asking him to leave the franchise, but fans and even analysts are starting to point out how forward is negatively affecting his team.
When LeBron doesn’t play, and Austin Reaves and Luka do, the Lakers are a better team.
Brian Windhorst said
This was LeBron James’ longtime supporter, who used statistics to point out a couple of weeks ago how his favorite player was, in fact, somewhere undermining the Lakers.

“When LeBron doesn’t play and Austin Reaves and Luka do, the Lakers are a better team… The numbers say when Luka and Reaves play together, the Lakers are a really good team”

While speaking on First Take, the ESPN senior writer pointed out that head coach JJ Redick has asked for more time to help the trio of the four-time league MVP, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves perform to their potential.
Brian Windhorst agreed that with every passing game, the triple threat is performing better. But even then, the Lakers are still an average team with the three superstars on the floor together. With not much time left, this could impact James’ decision about his future.
Analyst believes LeBron James has to accept being a role player on Lakers
While the conversations have shifted to why LeBron James should not be with the Lakers anymore, another analyst believes a role shift can help him stay in Los Angeles.
I do feel like in a playoff series, they have a better chance with LeBron than without him… The Lakers need LeBron to be Chris Bosh or Kevin Love.
Chris Broussard said on First Things First
The longtime analyst pointed out that James is experiencing a role reversal with Luka Doncic, and that is why when he is not on the court, the rest of the team plays better with the Slovenian.
“22 years as a superstar, you can’t be a role player… His presence on the court, because of his greatness and what he means to basketball…they just defer naturally.”@Chris_Broussard explains why the Lakers play more freely when LeBron isn’t on the court: pic.twitter.com/auD6HM22fE

That is a clear indication that whenever the father of three is not controlling the game, his teammates play to their roles. But when LeBron James is on the court, the other players naturally defer.
It can change if the GOAT candidate willingly accepts a change to being a role player, but as is with superstars, Chris Broussard does not see that happening.
