Fourth-quarter collapses always hurt the most in a football game. Todd Bowles has been part of a few in his coaching career, but the one on Thursday night broke something in him. The veteran head coach went on an unscripted and uncensored rant after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 29-28 despite leading by 15 points in the final ten minutes of the game.

Both teams entered the game on the back of disappointing results. The Buccaneers lost to the New Orleans Saints last week, while the Falcons suffered their second straight defeat after the Seahawks handed them a 37-9 beatdown at home.

The midweek game held little significance for the Falcons, who had already been eliminated from playoff contention. However, a win for the Buccaneers would have given them a record comparable to that of the reigning world champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bowles looked to be running away with the game when Falcons running back Bijan Robinson fumbled the ball, and Jacob Parrish recovered at the Atlanta 25-yard line. The Bucs capitalize with a touchdown. Quarterback Baker Mayfield found Chris Godwin in the end zone to take a fourteen-point lead with a quarter left to play.

The Falcons fought back. Robinson scored a 6-yard touchdown before tight end Kyle Pitts scored his third TD of the game to bring the Falcons within three points of the Bucs’ total.

On the subsequent drive, Mayfield’s pass intended for Mike Evans was intercepted by Dee Alford at the Atlanta 33-yard line. Falcons QB Kirk Cousins led a two-minute drive to set up a field goal for the win. Zane Gonzalez stepped up and kicked a walk-off 43-yard field goal to give Atlanta a 29-28 win.

The defeat left the Buccaneers with a 7-7 record after 14 games. For the second week in a row, the Bucs left the stadium empty-handed. To make matters worse, the Falcons won despite conceding 14 penalties.

Bowles wasn’t happy with the result. During the post-game press conference, the veteran coach went on an NSFW rant in front of the press.

It’s [the defeat] inexcusable. We don’t make excuses. We’ve got to care enough where it hurts. You’ve got to f**** care enough where that s*** hurts. You got to [expletive] care enough. It has to f**** mean something to you. It’s more than a job, it’s your livelihood. How well do you know your job? How well do you do your job? You can’t sugarcoat that s***. There’s no excuse for it.

This caught the reporters by surprise. It wasn’t the first time a coach had lost his cool, and certainly won’t be the last. However, Bowles usually keeps his emotions in check.

To be fair, his anger is justified. Their losses helped the Carolina Panthers, who are on a bye. And without even taking a snap, the Panthers are now leading the NFC South with a 7-6 record.

Mayfield finished with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. However, he also had 19 completions from 34 pass attempts (54%) and took 5 sacks. Baker blamed himself for the loss.

Disappointing, obviously. [The loss] falls on my shoulders… Can’t turn the ball over, can’t throw an interception… You can say what you want about being two scores up and the defense, but we have to be better on offense, and it comes down to how I play. This one’s gonna haunt me. This falls on my shoulders.

The Bucs have three more games remaining until the regular season wraps up. Two of them are against the Panthers. As it stands, the king of the South will be crowned on the final day in Tampa.
