Last week, Pete Alonso joined the Baltimore Orioles. The first baseman joined the American League East side on a 5-year, $155 million deal, bringing an end to his tenure with the New York Mets. 2-time All-Star Todd Frazier would later blast his ex-team and expressed that Alonso was “pis*ed off” by them.
The Mets went from having the best record in the league at one point in 2025 to missing the playoffs on the final day following a major slump in the last 3 months. Despite some top performances from Alonso and the other stars, the team was unable to punch their ticket to the playoffs and finished with a disappointing 83-79 record.
After their final day 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins, Alonso revealed that he would opt-out of his contract. The “Polar Bear” had agreed on a 2-year, $54 million contract and re-signed with the Mets before the start of the 2025 season. His deal did have an opt-out clause after this season.
Last Wednesday, reports emerged that Alonso had agreed to a 5-year, $155 million deal with the Orioles. Further reports suggested that the Mets never made an formal offer to Alonso this year.

Todd Frazier, who bestowed the “Polar Bear” nickname on Alonso, was among those who were left shaking their heads. While appearing on the Foul Territory Podcast, the former Mets star expressed that Alonso, too, deserved a big contract.
I think he was a little pis*ed off. You see all these guys getting these big contracts. He deserved it just as much as anybody else did… I think he’s worked his b*** off.

Last offseason, the Mets splashed the cash to bring in Juan Soto. The team signed the Dominican international on a 15-year, $765 million deal, making this the biggest contract offered to a player in MLB history.
While Alonso’s current deal with the Orioles is nowhere close to Soto’s mega deal, it is the highest Average Annual Value (AAV) offered to a first baseman in MLB. It is also the second-largest deal in Orioles history, following their 7-year, $161 million contract to Chris Davis in 2016.
Todd Frazier blasted NY Mets for not re-signing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz
The New York Mets lost two of their core players in the space of two days last week. While the loss of Pete Alonso was a huge one, the team also failed to bring back Edwin Diaz. Following this development, Todd Frazier blasted his former organization.

Just like Alonso, Diaz opted out of his deal this offseason. The 3-time All-Star pitcher had two years and $38 million guaranteed on his 5-year, $102 million deal.
Last Tuesday, reports emerged that he had agreed terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two-time defending champions strengthened their bullpen by adding Diaz on a 3-year, $69 million deal.
The following day, the Mets lost Alonso. During this conversation with Foul Territory, Frazier admitted that he was confused as to why the team did not re-sign these two stars.
I’m confused, you sign Juan Soto to a monster deal, but that should’ve been your top priority to get these guys back. There’s not that many players out there that have the ability of what Pete Alonso can do in a baseball game. Edwin Diaz one of the best closers we’ve seen in our generation.

The Mets did offer a 3-year, $66 million deal with deferrals to Diaz. However, the closer chose the Dodgers’ offer and joined them. This development came after the Mets signed Devin Williams on 3-year, $51 million deal.
Williams, who spent the 2025 season with the New York Yankees, became the latest player to go from the Yankees to the Mets. The pitcher did struggle in the Bronx and finished with a 4-6 record last campaign.
The National League side has also brought in Jorge Polanco on a 2-year, $40 million deal. He is expected to play as the first baseman for the Mets and fill the void left by Alonso’s departure in the field.
