After a successful run in TNA, Christian Cage returned to WWE in 2009. However, he surprisingly appeared on the company’s third brand at the time, ECW. Interrupting Jack Swagger, Cage made an underwhelming return, which was made even more unpleasant by Todd Grisham. The latter apathetically uttered, “It’s Christian” on commentary. Fifteen years later, Grisham finally revealed this was a Vince McMahon call.
Reacting to a post criticizing his commentary on X, Grisham recalled the infamous moment. The former WWE personality detailed how McMahon ordered him to say those exact words when Christian returned. Grisham could do nothing but accept and follow his boss’ instructions. Over the years, this moment has become a running online joke.
Todd Grisham’s revelation has fans speculating that the former chairman wanted to punish Christian for leaving WWE in 2005. The former Tag Team Champion had grown frustrated with his booking and joined rival promotion, TNA.
For some reason, McMahon never saw Christian as a potential main-event talent in WWE. Therefore, Captain Charisma failed to reach similar heights as his best friend, Edge. Even after winning his first World Heavyweight Championship, the Canadian star ended up losing the belt in five days.
In fact, the veteran wasn’t offered a contract following his return at the Royal Rumble 2021. Cage wound up in AEW months later. To no shock, he found more success under Tony Khan‘s leadership. Speaking of the latter, he seemingly reacted to Grisham’s tweet in his own way.
Tony Khan praises Christian Cage following Vince McMahon revelation
Tony Khan may have his critics now and then, but one thing that he’s been consistent with is being a supportive boss. Unlike Vince McMahon, the AEW owner has constantly backed his stars. An hour after Todd Grisham exposed McMahon’s dislike for Christian Cage, Khan sent a message on social media.
As expected, he lauded Cage for being an instrumental part of his promotion. Since joining AEW in 2021, the 50-year-old has been arguably on the greatest run of his career. Basking in his “Patriarchy” gimmick, Christian has won the TNT Championship twice.
At All In, Cage won the Casino Gauntlet match, which earned him a shot at the AEW World Title at any time and any place. In many fans’ eyes, the legend has deserved a run at the top for his tremendous character work. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the remainder of his career plays out.
