Todd Gurley was to the Los Angeles Rams as Christian McCaffrey is to the San Francisco 49ers. No other player had more touchdowns than Gurley in 2017-2018. He racked up a whopping 40 overall TDs in the span of 30 games.
However, his dominance at the top came to an abrupt end a couple of years later in Atlanta Falcons. He never wanted to leave the Rams but had no choice but to join the Falcons because of a few clauses in his contract.
Even though Gurley is still only 29 years old, he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2022 and it is more than likely he never will. In a recent 50,000 special episode of LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson’s 25/10 podcast, Gurley revealed that he has made peace with the decision to hang up his boots.
I got cut from the Rams [and then] I went to Atlanta. I kind of had to see what they were talking about for real because I played at Georgia [Bulldogs]... And I was like, the season was sorry. [And] then after that, it was like, alright bro, I live in L.A. I’m chilling. I’ve [done] everything.Todd Gurley said
It seems the player is well and truly done with the sport. He mentioned that he has achieved enough in his career and is now living his life in Los Angeles.
Todd Gurley’s bad knee cut short his NFL career
Gurley suffered because of a bad knee which he first discovered during the Rams Super Bowl run in 2018. The Doctors later alerted the franchise that it was arthritis. After an underwhelming 2019 season, in which he only managed 857 yards, the Rams released the 2-time All-Pro rusher.
Gurley’s knee problem kept him from giving his best in Atlanta, eventually forcing him to announce his retirement.
It [really] came down to like, it didn’t [really] matter if I scored 10 more touchdowns or if I scored zero. It wasn’t going to satisfy me no more.Todd Gurley said in the same podcast
It wasn’t over yet though. The Baltimore Ravens came calling which was Gurley’s favorite team growing up.
I grew up a Ravens fan, die hard. Ed Reed, [all time] favorite player... I’m like, bro I’m in L.A. I’m not about to go to… Detroit, or Baltimore? Hell no!!! I’m chillin’. I’m vibing,Todd Gurley said
Despite the opportunity to represent the Ravens, Gurley rejected them. According to the player, he wasn’t about to leave sunny LA for chilly Baltimore.
Todd Gurley played a total of 88 games in the NFL. He rushed 1,460 times for 6,082 yards, 67 touchdowns, 25 receptions for 164 receiving yards, and 12 touchdowns during his career.
