Jannik Sinner will be chasing history at the Australian Open. He will be bidding to complete the three-peat. It was back in 2024 that Sinner clinched his career’s first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by overcoming 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. He defended his crown this year by breezing past Alexander Zverev.
Former doubles No.1 Todd Woodbridge thinks Sinner will be the heavy favorite to win next year’s Australian Open and not Carlos Alcaraz because the Spaniard would find it difficult to focus on Majors after his split with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. Alcaraz recently parted ways with the 2003 French Open champion, ending the seven-year partnership.
I think it’s going to make it very difficult for Carlos to win a Major next year. We know he’s good enough, but that change at this point of his career, I find it mind-boggling. We’re talking about one of the greatest duos of coaching partnerships that our game has seen.
Todd Woodbridge said (via the official Instagram handle of the Australian Open)
Alcaraz has never reached the semifinal of the Melbourne Major, reaching the quarterfinals twice, in 2024 and 2025. In the previous two seasons, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic knocked him out in four sets.
When Juan Carlos hasn’t been around the last few years, Alcaraz does not play as good, and you can see him looking out into the stands. He’s actually a little unsure of himself, and it’s going to take months to settle down. And then, will he settle? In the meantime, he may give others the opportunity to get some victories. Given that change, I think Jannik has the upper hand, and he gets the three-peat.
Todd Woodbridge added
Since the 2024 season, Sinner and Alcaraz have only divided the Majors between them. This year, Sinner made the final of every Major, winning at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and losing the French Open and the US Open to the six-time Grand Slam champion.
Andy Roddick says Tommy Paul is better in this area than everyone except for Carlos Alcaraz
In an episode of the Served podcast, Andy Roddick was reviewing the top 20 players. On World No.20 Tommy Paul, Roddick expressed his wish to see his compatriot perform consistently and keep injuries at bay. He thinks there’s one aspect of the game where Paul is better at than everyone except Carlos Alcaraz.

He’s one of those guys you look at and watch; he’s made the semis of Australia, won the junior French Open, he made the semis of Rome. I think this year, before it started going downhill, he’s won Queen’s Club. Well-versed on every surface, as good a transition game this side of Alcaraz. Right, his ability to kind of take time away, use his volleys, use his quickness, use his athleticism.
Andy Roddick said
Paul failed to reach a final this year. Last year, he made it to four championship matches, winning titles at the Dallas Open, Queen’s Club Championships, and the Stockholm Open, and losing the final of the Delray Beach Open.
Paul has met Alcaraz six times, defeating him on two occasions. In Grand Slam events, Paul produced his best when he reached the semifinal of the 2023 Australian Open.
This year, he made two Grand Slam quarterfinals. At the Australian Open, eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev knocked him out in four sets, while at the French Open, eventual champion Alcaraz knocked him out in straight sets (handed him the bagel in the first set). In his home Grand Slam, the US Open, the 28-year-old has never progressed beyond the fourth round, reaching the stage in 2023 and 2024.
