Tokyo 2020: Can Neeraj Chopra and Bajrang Punia help India cross the London Olympics medal tally?
Neeraj Chopra and Bajrang Punia
After several moments of joy and a few heartbreaks, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics are down to the last two days. The Indian contingent started their journey with an aim to record their all-time best performance at the Games.
At the end of day 15, India sat at the 66th rank in the medals tally with two silver and three bronze medals. With a quest to break the best performance of the 2012 London Olympics (six medals), three athletes – Aditi Ashok (golf), Neeraj Chopra (javelin throw) and Bajrang Punia (wrestling) still have a chance to bring glory to their nation.
The trio will be seen in action while competing in their respective sports on August 7. Indian fans will be highly expecting a medal from Bajrang Punia and Neeraj Chopra while Aditi’s success won’t be less than any fairytale.
Let’s look at the chances of clinching a medal for each one of them at Tokyo 2020.
Aditi Ashok
The world number 200 golfer surprised all in her individual event performance at the ongoing edition of the Olympics. She is currently placed at second position with the last round remaining before the results get announced. If she continues a similar performance for just 18 more holes, she’ll be able to produce a miracle and the 23-year-old will inspire the generations to come.
Neeraj Chopra
Neeraj Chopra is set to represent his country at the final round of the men’s javelin throw event at the Tokyo Games. After finishing at the pole position in the qualification round, Chopra will be aiming to bring India’s maiden medal in the sport of athletics. The Indian track and field athlete has a decent chance of pulling the silver or bronze as there’s already stiff competition for the top spot.
Bajrang Punia
India’s one of the top medal prospects, Bajrang Punia suffered an unfortunate loss in his semi-final match against the Azerbaijan grappler. However, he has one more chance to clinch a medal by winning the bronze medal match. The 65kg wrestler will look to bear India’s flag at the closing ceremony with a medal around his neck.
