Yes, India have finally ended the century-old medal drought in a track and field event at any Olympics edition. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra defied all odds and ensured this jinx ends in a style as he clinched the gold medal at Tokyo 2020.

With the best throw of 87.58 meters, Chopra scripted history while leaving behind the athletes across the globe. This iconic moment not just marked India’s maiden track and field medal but also the second only gold medal in any individual event at the Gemes. Before him, shooter Abhinav Bindra was the sole Indian to finish at the top during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Chopra started the final round with his first throw landing right on the money with a stunning 87.03m throw. His second throw was even better as he breached the 87.58m mark to stay at the pole position for the present of the event.

Talking about the performances of the other throwers, the Czech Republic’s duo of Jakub Vadlejch (86.67 meters) and Vítězslav Veselý (85.44 meters) finished at the second and third positions respectively. Julian Weber (Germany), Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan), Aliaksei Katkavets (Belarus), Andrian Mardare (Moldova) and Lassi Etelatalo (Finland) were the others who finished at the subsequent positions. Surprisingly, world champion and pre-event favourite from Germany, Johannes Vetter finished ninth and couldn’t advance for the round of eight.

Coming back to the man of the moment, Neeraj Chopra, he is now the current Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Olympic Games champion.

India now seven medals in this edition’s tally which include gold, two silver and four bronze. The Indian contingent have also marked their country’s best-ever performance at any Olympics edition.
