Tokyo Olympics: Records shattered in Weightlifting, as Hidilyn Diaz scripts history by winning the first ever gold medal for Philippines

Records were shattered on Day 4 of Tokyo Olympics, as Hidilyn Diaz bagged a gold medal in Women’s 55kg event. The 30-year-old claimed Philippines’ first ever gold medal at Summer Olympic Games, after shattering the Olympic record in her category.

Hidilyn Diaz lifted a total of 224kg, which was just enough to warrant her a gold medal. The Philippines athlete also set an Olympic record in that process, as the event saw several new records being created.

Qiuyun Liao of China came in second with a total lift of 223kg. The Chinese was favorite to claim the gold medal at Tokyo Olympics, as she holds the world record in the women’s clean and jerk section, and overall score.

Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan claimed a bronze medal with a total score 213kg. However, the event was more or less about the athletes from Philippines and China, who ran the show.

Three Olympic Records shattered in Women’s 55kg weightlifting

Muattar Nabieva of Uzbekistan came in fourth with a total tally of 212kg. However, she shattered the Olympic record in the snatch section, by recording a lift of 98kg. She was unable to replicate her heroics in the clean and jerk section, as she managed to lift just 114kg.

The performer of the day was Hidilyn Diaz n Diaz who put up a superb show on Monday. She created the Olympic Record in the clean and jerk section, with a total lift of 127kg. Her total tally of 224kg also set a new Olympic benchmark, and the fans were treated to some delightful action in Women’s 55kg event.

  • Muattar Nabieva – Snatch (98kg)
  • Hidilyn Diaz – Overall (224kg)

Chinese athlete, Qiuyun Liao of China would be disappointed to have not secured a gold medal in the event. Both, Liao and Diaz lifted 97kg in the snatch section, and the entire decision boiled down to the clean and jerk event.
