Ireland Women vs India Women

The Indian women’s hockey team finally have a win under their belt at the Tokyo Olympics. It was a late goal by Navjot Kaur which proved to be the difference between Indian and Ireland. The Women in Blue were under tremendous pressure to get a win under their belt in the campaign and they managed to pull it off in the dying moments.

It was a remarkable game of hockey as both sides gave their best but it was India who had the last laugh. Irland gave their best in the dying moments to salvage a point but in vain. India were cautious having scored a late goal and were able to hold the Irish at bay at the end.

The Indian defence pulled off a fabulous performance having conceded only three penalty corners compared to the 14 conceded by the Irish. With the defence stepping up, the onus was on the Indian forwards to give them the breakthrough and they succeeded following 30 circle penetrations.

Up next, India squares off with South Africa in their final group game. They will have to win the encounter if they are to give themselves a chance to make it to the quarterfinals. Even if they do, a Herculean task awaits them as they will have to go toe to toe against the Pool B toppers Australia. Nonetheless, making it to the knockouts will be nothing short of an achievement for the side who are featuring in just their third Olympic Games.
