Qinwen Zheng has been on a roll after she bowed out of the Wimbledon Championships in the first round. The Chinese ace went on to claim the title in Palermo and also won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Zheng has made the most of the Asian swing, winning 11 out of 13 matches played so far.
On Saturday, Zheng reached her second final at the Tokyo Open, defeating Diana Shnaider on her way. She will be facing 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the title clash on Sunday. Kenin toppled Briton Katie Boulter in the semifinal. This will be the pair’s first meeting on the tour.

Qinwen Zheng vs. Sofia Kenin: Match Preview
Qinwen Zheng has been in serious form ever since she suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Lulu Sun at the Championships this year. Since that tournament, Zheng has now won 27 of her last 31 matches. During that span, she won her first title of the season at the Palermo Ladies Open.
She then captured the Olympic gold, returned to the US Open quarterfinals, and made her first WTA 1000 semifinal and final at the China Open and Wuhan Open, respectively. Now, the 22-year-old is close to winning her second title of the season.
In the WTA 500 tournament so far, Zheng has defeated Moyuka Uchijma, Leylah Fernandez, and Shnaider. The World No. 7 has dropped only one set (against Fernandez). In the semifinal, Zheng defeated Shnaider 7-6(5), 6-3.
On the other hand, Sofia Kenin took down Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-4. The two players will be eager to face each other for the first time on the tour.

Sofia Kenin has not had a great season so far, suffering first or second-round exits at every second tournament she played in 2024. Most recently, the Amercian WTA player lost to qualifier Aoi Ito in the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka. Before that, Kenin suffered a first-round exit at Wuhan Open, losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova.
However, in the tournament in Tokyo so far, Kenin has put on a spirited performance, defeating third-seed Daria Kasatkina in the third round. The 25-year-old caused two more upsets as she beat tenth-seed Xinyu Wang and ninth-seed Boulter on her way to the final.
She is now up against the top seed Zheng. Although Kenin has put on a show in the tournament so far, going past the Olympic gold medalist will be tough. Also, the Chinese ace is enjoying a great run and thus, she is expected to ease past Kenin on Sunday.
