Tokyo Paralympics: Indian Contingent Finishes Strong in Archery After Open Ranking Rounds

Day 1 of Archery at Tokyo Paralympics saw the mens and women’s individual ranking rounds as well as the team ranking rounds take place.
India has sent a contingent of 5 archers to the Paralympics, in the hopes of finishing on the podium. While Rakesh Kumar and S.S Swami would contend in the men’s individual compound, Harvinder Singh and C. Vivek would take part in the men’s individual recurve.
Jyoti Balinan would be the only female archer for India, and along with taking part in the Women’s individual compound ranking round, she would also contend in the mixed team rounds with Rakesh Kumar.
The day got off to a slow start for Jyoti Baliyan, but with a setting a season best of 671 points, she eventually finished the ranking round in 15th spot at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Tokyo Paralympics: Rakesh Kumar finishes strong in men’s individual compound round
The men’s individual ranking round saw C. Vivek Finish 10th in recurve with a total score of 609 points. His compatriot Harvinder Singh however, slipped down to 21st position, finishing with a total score of 600 points.
The men’s individual compound round saw SS Swami deliver a personal best with a final score of 682 points, finishing in 21st place. Rakesh Kumar on the other hand broke his own record as he finished third with 699 points, as he shot 53 ten arrows.
This meant that Rakesh Kumar and Jyothi Baliyan would make the mixed rounds, and finished with a ranking of six, as Kumar’s 699 points and Baliyan’s 671 put them with a total of 1370 points. China placed first with a paralympic record of total 1388 points.
