Since hanging his cleats in 2023, if there’s anything that the legend Tom Brady has focused on besides his career has been his three children. Throughout his time playing in the NFL, he sacrificed a lot and his post-retirement has been about making up to it. However, it has imparted valuable life lessons, particularly concerning parenting in today’s modern world. 

During his appearance at Fortune’s Global Forum in New York, the Fox Sports analyst reflected on fatherhood, opening up about the adverse effects of modern parenting which he realized some time ago. Being a father of three, Brady also admitted to making terrible mistakes.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion then reflected on his own journey through the NFL and college, acknowledging that whenever he faced a challenge– despite the risk of failure– he pursued it wholeheartedly. He believes everyone experiences such moments, and when looking back, those challenges often turn out to be “the best things that could’ve happened.”

Having said that, he claimed that he wouldn’t have achieved the success he has today if he hadn’t challenged himself in high school and college sports. And he takes a similar approach while parenting his children: John “Jack” Edward Thomas, 17, Benjamin Rein, 14, and Vivian Lake, 11.

While talking about his kids and the parenting approach he has towards them, he also shared the ambitions that his oldest child, Jack– whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan, has. The 6’4” teenager wants to follow in his father’s footsteps but in a different sport: basketball.

Unfortunately, he jumps as high as I do. But I tell him, ‘Dude, you’re gonna be a stud.’ I said, ‘Wait till you hit your growth spurt, you’re gonna be jumping higher, you’re gonna be dunkin.’ And whether he does or not, who cares? But I want him to know that his dad’s got his back.

Inspired by the parenting style of his parents, the winningest quarterback of the NFL revealed that he will always support his children as his parents supported him, but at the end of the day, they will face their own challenges and must learn to overcome them on their own.
