After a disheartening start to his career, including a change in the offensive coordinator mid-season, Caleb Williams would look forward to a better sophomore year. The Chicago Bears have made some major moves, like snatching Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions, to spearhead their coaching this season.
Ben Johnson had made quite an impact on his former protégé, Jared Goff. Goff was one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the league, leading his team to fifteen wins in the season. He’s expected to turn around Williams, who came into the league as the first overall pick.
Recently, legendary quarterback and sportscaster Tom Brady admitted that he thinks Ben Johnson can make some waves. He also pitched in his thoughts on what will make them better. Brady told Fox 32 News:
He does a lot of things really well. I think Ben’s gonna help him a lot. It’s a great offensive system he’ll be in. Now it’s about them really getting on the same page and really getting in tune with Caleb’s strengths and weaknesses and really try to obviously mitigate the weaknesses and propagate the strengths.
The Bears have huge plans for the quarterback. Ben Johnson claimed that he expects Williams to complete 70% of the passes he makes. Meanwhile, Williams himself has set an agenda of becoming the first-ever Chicago Bears QB to record 4000 passing yards in a single season. Erik Kramer holds the record of most passing yards, a feat he achieved in 1995 when he threw for 3838 yards.
In 2024, Williams fell short of a few hundred yards. As a rookie, he demolished several of the Bears’ rookie records. He holds the record of most passing yards (3541), passing touchdowns (20), passing attempts (562), and passing completions (351) for a rookie in Bears uniform.
Amid inconsistencies, Caleb Williams has shown improvement
The Chicago Bears start their preseason in six days, and there are a few corners in Caleb Williams that need polishing. On Day 9 of their training camp, Williams showed both promise as well as the fact that there are a few areas where he has to work on.

In the initial moments of the training, Caleb Williams showed serious improvement and executed a strong performance. Zach Pearson reported that the team got off to a hot start in the 1-on-1 drill and that the quarterback and “the offense are getting more and more comfortable” these last few practices. He added that Saturday was “another good day out there.”

However, there were a few elements that prevented it from being a perfect slate. After a solid touchdown pass to Cole Kmet, Williams fumbled in the next play. He was picked off by CB Nahshon Wright while trying to sneak a pass in the end zone.
Furthermore, despite being deep into camp, the Bears’ offense is still dealing with botched, mishandled center-to-quarterback exchanges. However, it is more of a center issue with a backup rotation taking place today. Nevertheless, it would be better for the Bears to establish chemistry between the quarterback and the centers early on.
The shift from his initial days in training camp under Ben Johnson has been visible. The quarterback struggled with interceptions and offensive failures, which analysts didn’t miss highlighting. The coach, at one point, even called off the first-team drills as punishment.
