Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs got away with some of the worst penalty calls the Houston Texans faced in the Divisional round. Heading into the AFC Championship game, the discourse surrounding those officiating mistakes still continues.

The evident flop from the three-time Super Bowl MVP was thankfully not called. However, it was the ‘Unnecessary Roughness’ penalty that drew the ire of everyone watching. It was evident that referee Clay Martin got it wrong as neither of the Texans players made significant contact with the QB.

After the game, first it was Houston Texans players and then head coach DeMeco Ryans who did not stop from suggesting referees favored the Chiefs. As the discourse continued, one question Colin Cowherd wanted to ask the best to ever do it was if the ‘Unnecessary Roughness’ penalty was justified.

If you’re running with the ball, you should protect yourself. You can’t, in essence, have the defensive player come in at half speed and then you run over the defensive player because he’s afraid of getting a penalty. I think it’s just a disservice to the game. It’s something that I would hope that people would address.

Tom Brady has earlier called out offensive coordinators for putting quarterbacks in harm’s way. But even then, he believes referees should not have to protect quarterbacks. In fact, he believes whoever runs with the ball has the onus to protect themselves.

If defensive players are being penalized, the seven-time Super Bowl winner believes it will eventually soften the game. Tom Brady referenced that a ball will not pop out with a soft hit, suggesting strong hits are what define football games.

Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs will face Josh Allen and Buffalo Bills

With the AFC Championship game set to play out this Sunday, both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills are preparing for battle. After practice, Patrick Mahomes shot down questions about receiving favorable calls from officials.

However, there is way too much proof that the Chiefs have benefitted on numerous occasions. It could also be part of conversations Josh Allen, and his teammates will have. They would have likely heard what the Houston Texans players had to say and will be wary of what it is to come.

If they stick to the methods they utilized in Week 11, they could nullify any such potential favors. That time, the Bills defense they stopped Mahomes from having the ball for long. Josh Allen took over and continued to score to keep the Chiefs at bay.

They should follow the same formula in the AFC Championship game. Patrick Mahomes and his teammates come alive in the playoffs. Add to that the officiating mistakes and the odds could favor them. However, Allen and his teammates are the only ones to know how to beat them fair and square.
