Tom Brady sat in the FOX booth at Soldier Field on Sunday (September 21, and saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Dallas Cowboys’ defense. Matt Eberflus stared in silence as his scheme was demolished by the same team that fired him during the last campaign.

Dallas went into the tie following a win over the New York Giants. A win that came in overtime despite conceding 37 points. The Cowboys allowed quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for 450 yards and 3 touchdowns, and gave up 135 yards on the ground.

In contrast, the Bears were on the receiving end of a massive beating by the Detroit Lions. A struggling Caleb Williams threw for 200+ yards, 2 touchdowns, and one pick, but also turned the ball over a couple of times and took several sacks.

This was the best time for the Cowboys to attack the wounded Bears. Quarterback Dak Prescott tried his best to score offensive points. He orchestrated 14 points with the help of George Pickens and Brandon Aubrey, but 2 turnovers (both to Tremaine Edmunds) tipped the balance in the home team’s favor.

The defense lacked any killer edge. Trevon Diggs missed a couple of tackles before going off injured. The pass rush looked slow and failed to record a single sack over Williams.

It was clear that the Cowboys lacked a ringleader in the base of their defense.

There’s not enough guys in the rush, and certainly no coverage. Another wide-open receiver. Matt Eberflus is just looking for answers over there. Not rushing well, not covering well, not knowing their way on defense.

Tom Brady said after observing the poor defensive plays from the Cowboys

Micah Parsons was the difference-maker for the Cowboys on countless occasions in the past. Owner Jerry Jones was well aware of Parsons’ influence on the defense and yet still traded him away after bickering all summer.

Parsons’ replacement, Kenny Clark, recorded only one assisted tackle the entire time he was on the field against the Bears.

The Bears did not respect Matt Eberflus’ defense

From the start, new head coach Ben Johnson, who replaced Eberflus in Chicago, showed off his bag of tricks. From trick plays to QB sneaks, fans cheered nearly every play.

In the first half, Williams threw a 65-yard flea-flicker to rookie speedster Luther Burden III, who beat Diggs for his first career NFL touchdown. Brady was impressed by Johnson’s innovative play.

Here’s [Luther] Burden at the top—he lollies off the ball—as soon as you feel that safety settle his feet, you take off. How about that throw? Basically flat-footed. That’s a lolly, get everyone to safety… A seven route to the corner of the end zone. They drafted Burden for his speed. Caleb Williams for his arm.

In the fourth quarter, Johnson once again drew up a 1000 IQ play.

Despite leading by ten points on fourth down, Williams threw a dart to a wide-open DJ Moore inside the Cowboys’ end zone for a touchdown that extended the lead to seventeen.

Williams finished the game with 19 completions for 298 yards and 4 touchdowns to four different receivers (Burden, Moore, Cole Kmet, and Rome Odunze).

The Bears improved to 1-2 after defeating the Cowboys. Up next, the Bears play two consecutive away ties against the Raiders and the Commanders. Meanwhile, the Cowboys host Parsons and the Packers at Arlington in week four before visiting the Big Apple to face the New York Jets.
