The coaching scenario looks significantly different in the NFL in under a week of the 2024-25 regular season-ending. The likes of Doug Pederson, Jerod Mayo, and Antonio Pierce have all been relieved of their duties. The Las Vegas Raiders ended the season with a 4-13 record, the worst in the AFC right on par with the Patriots.

With Antonio Pierce gone, the question arises, who will replace him as the team’s next Head Coach? With Tom Brady playing a key role in this decision, his first preference was a candidate with whom he has a lot of experience playing under. The former NFL quarterback reportedly reached out to Bill Belichick to inquire about the possibility of having him as the team’s next HC. This comes despite Brady having congratulated him after he landed his new role.

Tom Brady tried to reach out to Belichick despite the latter having stepped into his new role as the Head Coach at the University of North Carolina. The seven-time Super Bowl champion wanted to be certain that his former partner-in-crime was truly off-the-market before considering any other candidate for the job.

The irony of the situation is comical. One year ago, no NFL team was willing to give him a head coaching role and now, it is not just the Raiders that are interested in Belichick. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network confirms that at least one other team has expressed interest in considering Belichick as the next HC.

The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, and Las Vegas Raiders require an HC. New England is not a realistic destination as they would not approach Belichick but the other teams, especially the Jaguars, Bears, and Raiders would deem him to be a candidate that can make immediate changes.

Bill Belichick is embarking on a journey on the road less taken. At 72, he will be coaching a college football team for the first time in his career. His role at UNC comes with its own set of challenges such as recruiting talented candidates and convincing them to join his program in the current NIL times.

This, however, allows him to create a change he has been vouching for. Belichick has been vocal about how college programs are meant to turn young athletes into professionals and it will be interesting to see how he can accomplish the same.
