Washington Capitals alternate captain Tom Wilson can’t believe captain Alex Ovechkin will be out of the lineup for weeks due to injury. During his 20 NHL seasons, Ovie has missed only 59 games with 35 being due to injury.

He was on an absolute roll this 2024-25 season, but it came to a halt on Monday during the Capitals faceoff against Utah Hockey Club. Despite the team’s 6-2 win, they lost their captain due to an accident on the ice.

Ovie slammed against Utah’s forward Jack McBain which led to a leg-to-leg collision in the third period. He was led back into the locker room and did not appear for the rest of the night.

Despite the teams, and fans’ utmost wish for positive news, Alex Ovechkin was diagnosed with a broken left fibula which will keep him out for 4-6 weeks. This is his longest career break since 2009 when he missed six games due to an upper-body injury.

We were sitting there saying like, ‘This is weird. Like, it’s unbelievable that he’s actually hurt.’ It’s one of those things where like, ‘He’s going to miss games?’ It’s new to me. He doesn’t go out there and just coast around…I’m sure he’s going to be back stronger than ever and flying around soon.

Wilson can’t believe Ovechkin will not be gliding on the ice for weeks due to injury. He spoke about how he’s played every shift for 20 years and now that he’s gone it’s weird both in the locker room and on the ice.

Capitals to hold fort in absence of Alex Ovechkin for upcoming games

While the captain is out recovering, Capitals coach Spencer Carbery is set to keep the team moving for Alex Ovechkin’s sake, too. Ovie was just 27 goals away from surpassing ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky’s NHL all-time record.

The anticipation of if to when he’ll break the record has been a long journey for the 39-year-old. He’s the oldest in NHL history to reach 15 goals in a season. While he’ll be out for a long time, everyone is expecting him to surpass Gretzky this season.

Even Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon talked about his dominating performance so far in the season. While it’s upsetting to see such a player sit out due to unintentional injury on the clash, everyone is hoping to see him back at 100% health soon.
