Spain will kick-start their Davis Cup Finals campaign against the Czech Republic on November 20. The former will be led by David Ferrer, while Tomas Berdych will lead the latter.
Berdych also hopes to create a new rivalry with Ferrer. Both players hung up their rackets in 2019. They had an 8-8 head-to-head record, with Berdych winning their last meeting in the third round of he 2017 Wimbledon.
Everything has changed for David and me. In 2012, we were running on the court, and now we’re sitting on the bench. This will be the big contrast we’ll see. It’s a good challenge, a duel I’m looking forward to. For me, this adventure began at the start of this season. It’s been a great year.
Tomas Berdych said in the pre-tournament press conference
Spain is the winner of six Davis Cup titles, winning between 2000 and 2019. The Czech Republic has lifted it thrice (1980, 2012, 2013).
Jakub Mensik reflects on the Czech Republic’s match against the United States
In the Davis Cup Qualifiers, the Czech Republic defeated the United States 3-2, and Jakub Mensik remembers it very well how tough the matches were.

The whole team played very well in the last series against the United States; it was a very tough tie, that’s for sure. Winning against them gives us a lot of confidence heading into this Final Eight and our next challenge. For me personally, it was a huge challenge to play both the singles and doubles matches; those three matches were very difficult for me.
Against the US, following Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram‘s doubles win, Mensik and Jiri Lehecka ensured it’s their team who book a ticket to Bologna. Lehecka upset Taylor Fritz, while Mensik sealed the win by defeating Frances Tiafoe.
Mensik lifted his career’s first title this year at the Miami Open by defeating none other than 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. He was last seen in action at the Paris Masters, where his campaign was ended by Valentin Vacherot.
Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from the Davis Cup Finals
Carlos Alcaraz wanted to end his 2025 season after Spain’s Davis Cup campaign. But unfortunately for the six-time Grand Slam champion, his hamstring injury spoiled his plans.

The 22-year-old injured his hamstring during the first set of the title clash of the ATP Finals against arch-rival Jannik Sinner. Last year, Spain lost 2-0 to the Netherlands, and the tie also ended Rafael Nadal’s career.
I’m very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna… I have an edema in the sciatica of my right leg and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the biggest thing there is and I was very excited to be able to help fight for the Saladera. I’m going home sore…

Although Alcaraz couldn’t finish the season on a high note, he clinched the most on the men’s tour. From 11 finals, he lifted eight titles, including the French Open and the US Open.
The six-time Grand Slam champion played his career’s first championship match at the ATP Finals. Thanks to the win, Sinner now trails 6-10 in the head-to-head matchups. It was Alcaraz’s sixth meeting against the four-time Grand Slam champion this year, following the Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, Cincinnati Masters, and the US Open. Alcaraz, however, also ends the season as the No.1 player despite entering the ATP Finals as a No.2 player.
