Tommy DeVito came in for the New York Giants in 2023 after Daniel Jones’ unfortunate season-ending injury. The hometown hero, born and raised in New York City, went on a 4-5 record with the team while becoming an instant hit with the team’s fanbase for his touchdown celebration, referencing his Italian heritage.

In his 2024 season debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DeVito did not get the chance to do his celebration, but Baker Mayfield did. The quarterback had a rushing touchdown seconds before halftime and mimicked DeVito’s Italian celebration as he put his hands in the air and pinched his fingers as he shook his wrists.

Honestly, I really didn’t know until someone just mentioned in the locker room. They were having a good game, celebrated. It is what it is. Kind of happened last year, I mean it’s gonna happen I guess.

Tommy DeVito told reporters in his postgame press conference

It was a rough start to the year for the quarterback, who ended his season debut with 189 yards and no touchdowns or turnovers.

Baker Mayfield addressed his imitation of Tommy DeVito’s celebration in his postgame press conference.

It’s not a disrespectful thing. I met Tommy in Gegas at the Super Bowl last year- he’s got a lot of swag. The fans love him here, so paying a little tribute to him.

Baker Mayfield said

The quarterback got caught up in the moment and since New York loves DeVito; he decided to pay tribute to him by imitating his celebration. It is all respect between the two.

The celebration started in 2023 after Tommy DeVito brought to fruition an idea that Giants assistant athletic trainer Phil Buzzerio gave him. The Italians are known to use their hands a lot while talking, and this movement is what inspired the celebration. With this move, the quarterback hopes to pay homage to his Italian heritage.
