The Los Angeles Dodgers have once again made a big move in the offseason. The 2024 World Series champions have extended the contract of Tommy Edman by offering him a five-year, $74 million deal. This does include some deferred money.
The 29-year-old joined the Dodgers mid-season through a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as a top star in the Dodgers lineup.
His performances in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the New York Mets earned him several applause. He was later judged the MVP of that series as the Los Angeles-based franchise advanced to the World Series.
This five-year extension will run through the 2029 season. The deal also includes an option for a sixth-year through a club option. On top of that, Edman will also receive a signing bonus of $17 million.
However, the biggest thing in his contract is the deferred amount. Edman will have $25 million deferred over 10 years.

This move of the Dodgers comes just a few days after they shocked the world and agreed on a deal with Blake Snell. The two-time Cy Young Award penned down a 5-year, $182 million deal with the team. As per reports, there is a sum of $65 million deferred in Snell’s deal.
The Dodgers are now reported to have around over $1 billion in deferrals. A huge part of this comes from the mega-deal Shohei Ohtani signed last year. The Japanese two-way star signed a 10-year, $700 million deal. However, he agreed to defer around $680 million, which will be paid to him from 2034 to 2043.

Despite the outrage, the Dodgers will likely continue to use this tactic with other stars. The team is reported to be working on deals that could bring Teoscar Hernandez and Clayton Kershaw back to them. On top of that, they are also locked in the $600 million sweepstakes of Juan Soto.
