American tennis star Tommy Paul left the Paris Olympics with a bronze medal doubles win alongside his partner Taylor Fritz. The 27-year-old has revealed that despite the semifinal loss at the Summer Games, he was determined to bring home a medal for his country.

Paul and Fritz were the only American tennis players to bring home a medal from the Summer Games. Fritz exited the singles in the Round of 16 after losing to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. Paul, on the other hand, lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. After that, both players focused on the doubles to ensure they bagged a medal.

They formed a formidable team, winning their two opening match before ending British legend Andy Murray and Dan Evans‘ run in the quarterfinals. However, they couldn’t reach the final, losing 5-7, 2-6 to the Australian pair of Matthew Ebden and John Peers in the semifinals. They bounced back in the third-place match beating Czech duo Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 6-2 to win the bronze medal.

Paul went to Paris banking on his Games experience from Tokyo and was determined to bring home a medal for his country.

I went to Paris thinking I'd already had an Olympic experience. I came to Tokyo to be an Olympian, and this time I was determined to bring a medal to the United States. Fortunately, Fritz and I played some great doubles matches and were able to bounce back from the semifinal loss and bring something back to the United States.

They have both won two titles each this year. Paul claimed his first title at the Dallas Open and his second at the Queen’s Club Championships. Fritz beat Paul to win the Delray Beach Open in February and defended his Eastbourne title during the grass season.

Paul will play Brandon Nakashima in the second round in Montreal, while Fritz takes on Washington Open champion Sebastian Korda. Korda is expected to be a tough nut to crack for Fritz, as the fellow American is flying high after winning his second ATP career title.
