  • Jodar has rapidly climbed the ATP rankings, breaking into the top 35 after starting the season outside the top 160.
  • He won his first ATP title at the Marrakech Open and reached the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open.

Toni Nadal has highlighted that Rafael Jodar can become the best player of his generation following his near-perfect run at the Madrid Open. The Spaniard, who was ranked outside the top 160 at the start of the season, has now broken into the top 35 and could climb higher should he have another run at the Italian Open.

At this time last year, Jodar was still playing college tennis. The 19-year-old decided to turn professional this season after playing in the ATP Challenger at the end of 2025. Despite limited experience on tour, he has been a revelation in the men’s tour and has now been dubbed to follow in the footsteps of Carlos Alcaraz.

He played as a qualifier at the Miami Open, reaching the third round, his best run in a Masters 1000 tournament at that time. He improved at the Marrakech Open in Morocco, where he won his maiden ATP title, becoming the second player born in 2006, after Joao Fonseca, to win a championship on tour.

Jodar was handed a wildcard at the Barcelona Open, and he made good use of it by getting to the semi-finals before Arthur Fils defeated him in three sets. At the Madrid Open, he earned his first top 10 win in the second round after shocking Alex de Minaur in straight sets at the Caja Magica.

However, his run came to an end in the quarter-finals, where he fell to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. After the loss, Sinner showered praise on the World No.34, stressing that he has the potential to be a good player. In an article on El País, Toni Nadal pointed out that he sees the youngster becoming one of the best tennis players in the world:

His progress has been dazzling in a very short period of time and he has become, in my view, the best player of this new generation and the one with the greatest potential. I believe that, in a few years, and I’m almost certainly wrong and it will be a few months, Rafa will become one of the best tennis players in the world, a strong contender to make life difficult for the best players of the moment and to fight to win the most important tournaments.

There have been debates about whether Jodar has the potential to challenge Sinner and Alcaraz on tour in the future, but the 19-year-old has often admitted that he doesn’t want to be dragged into it as he still has a long way to go in his career. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev has suggested that the test for the true quality of Jodar will be at Grand Slam tournaments.

They are very decisive when they decide to go for the point, they are capable of generating winning shots from any position and, at the same time, they force their opponents to have to take many risks to score the point on their side.

Jodar’s only Grand Slam experience came at thus years Australian Open in Melbourne. He began as a qualifier, winning his qualifying matches to earn a place in the draw. He won his opening match in the draw before losing to 2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik in straight sets.
